Design vs Functionality

Design vs Functionality

I spent a great morning at the Leamington Business EXPO hosted by Wright Hassall and NOAW today.  Rebecca Fahy of Jigsaw CCS and I ran a collaborative seminar on Design vs. Functionality.  We had a full house for the event and  could have spent much longer than our 40 mintues tackling the issues facing current small businesses in engaging their audiences in both online and offline communications.

Rebecca intrigued the participants with her observations on colour and their deep cultural and genetic impact upon our judgements and the extent to which the right imagery can turn an unintelligble headline into instantly recognisable meaning.

Meanwhile, I focused on the need for business communications including print, web and social media to have a clear and targeted set of aims which meet the user's expectations and which are constantly monitored, measured and reviewed to be sure of a return on your investment (either of time or money).

The event was attended by over 100 representative from small businesses in the area and was followed by a lunch with guest speaker Vikki Heywood of the RSC.  It was an inspiring event focusing, for a change, on all the growing and innovative businesses there are here on our doorstep.  It was also where The Letting People launched their new website and franchise opportunity.  We have been working closely with Caroline and Anthony of The Letting People to integrate their existing business systems into their new site, reducing staff work loads and maxmimising online enquiries from prospective clients.
