Action for Blind People: Skills In-Sight
Action for Blind People's Skills In-Sight project aims to create a toolkit of accessible maths and English assessments, primarily for use in colleges. The toolkit will comprise tactile, large print and online versions of assessments, and we've been commissioned to build the online assessments.
The key here is accessibility: the assessments are intended for use by blind and partially-sighted students with a variety of needs and varying levels of IT skills. Some users will use magnification software, some will use screen reading software, some will be able to use a mouse and some will be reliant on key commands.
The other main requirements were that the system be hosted by Oxford CC and that access be controlled by the Learning & Skills Improvement Service's Excellence Gateway user account system.
We've come up with a web-based solution that includes:
- a bespoke database to host questions and answers
- logic for automated marking
- audio files to read questions
- PDF export and automated emailing of assessment results
...and an exceptionally accessible user interface that lets users change sizes of fonts and images and screen colours.
We've done everything we can to ensure compatability with popular accessibility packages like Jaws and Zoomtext, and to provide similar inbuilt audio and visiual assistance for users who aren't already familiar with those packages.
At the time of writing the maths assessments are in the final stages of user testing, and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with testers being impressed by the ease of use and clarity.
The Skills-In Sight project is due to be rolled out to colleges across the country in January 2012.
